Jemez Mountain Trail
A National Scenic Byway, the Jemez Mountain Trail offers some of the most stunning vistas as you past amazing geological formations, ancient Indian ruins, the Jemez Pueblo and the remainders of the area's logging, mining and ranching heritage. Much of the region is now a National Recreation Area, and there are many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping and cross-country skiing. The Jemez Mountains are famous for their natural hot springs.
Some of the things to see include:
- San Ysidro – Named for the patron saint of farmers, San Ysidro remains the only surviving settlement of the original seven "Pueblos de los Jemez" formed under the Spanish crown. The village features a restored Spanish adobe church and local artisan works
- Walatowa Visitor Center - Learn about the Jemez Pueblo through information, exhibits, a nature walk and gift shop. Studio tours, bread making demonstrations and examples of traditional social dances are available with advanced notice. Please follow all special rules for photographs, paints, etc. when visiting this or any other Pueblo.
